Area:

The North East Jutland is mainly known for its cosy towns on the eastern coast, for instance Hals Sæby and Frederikshavn. Take your car and go by the coast road to Hals at the mouth of the Limfiord afterwards continuing to Frederikshavn. On your way you drive through a varied landscape very near to the coast. The water along the north eastern coast is calmer than that of the famous West coast so you can easily find some fine and children friendly beaches here.
On your way you will find cosy Sæby which became market town in 1524. Today Sæby is a tourist destination, and the many tourists visit its old houses and small and cosy streets. You can also visit the Sæby Museum, Sæby Vandmølle (water mill) or Sæby Mini town – an outdoor exhibition where a 1:10 scale model of the old houses of Sæby have been recreated. In Frederikshavn you can get the feeling of being in a “big town”. This is a place that throughout many years was a very important heart of navigation which is easy to be seen when looking at the many historical buildings. Today you can go by ferry from here to Oslo in Norway and to Göteborg in Sweden, but you can also go by the ferry to Læsø.
In north east Jutland you will find Voergaard Slot (castle) situated behind the widest moat in Denmark. It is one of the finest and most well-preserved castles from the Renaissance. In the castle there is an outstanding collection of European art and furniture, among other things some paintings by Goya, Rubens, Rapahel and El Greco, and personal effects from Napoleon the 1st, Louis XIV and Marie-Antoinette.
